While Ninh Binh is famous for its river caves in Trang An and Tam Coc, the province also hides a spectacular dry cavern that rivals the majesty of Ha Long Bay's most famous grottoes. Van Trinh Cave, often described as a "Heavenly Palace," is one of the largest and most beautiful caves in the region, located deep within Mo Mountain in Nho Quan District. For travelers willing to venture off the beaten path, this site offers a mesmerizing display of glittering stalactites and towering stone arches without the crowds found at more popular tourist spots.

About the Van Trinh cave

Van Trinh Cave (Dong Van Trinh) is situated in Mo Mountain, Thuong Hoa Commune, Nho Quan District, roughly 25km from Ninh Binh City. Historically, it was also known as "Giang Tien" (Descending Fairy) cave, a name that hints at the ethereal beauty found inside. To reach the entrance, visitors typically take a short boat ride from the Hoang Long river wharf or a scenic walk along the dyke, followed by a climb of about 80 stone steps up the mountainside. The cave spans an impressive 4,000 square meters, making it one of the most spacious dry caverns in Ninh Binh.

Best time to visit

The cave maintains a naturally cool and ventilated atmosphere year-round, but the journey there is best enjoyed during the dry season from November to April. During these months, the weather is pleasant for climbing the stone steps and enjoying the surrounding countryside views. Autumn (September to October) is particularly beautiful, as the air is crisp and the landscape along the Hoang Long River is lush and vibrant, providing perfect conditions for photography.

What makes Van Trinh Cave special?

The "cathedral architecture" formation

Upon entering, visitors are immediately struck by the sheer scale of the cavern. The ceiling vaults soar to heights of over 100 meters, creating a sense of space that resembles a grand European cathedral or a royal palace. Unlike the cramped tunnels found in some other caves, the floor of Van Trinh is relatively flat and spacious, allowing visitors to walk comfortably and gaze up at the massive stone "chandeliers" hanging from the roof.

A natural art museum

The cave acts as a gallery of nature's sculpture. The stalactites and stalagmites here are still "alive" and glittering, forming shapes that spark the imagination. Locals have named various formations after their likenesses, such as the "King's Throne," "The Fairy Chessboard," and the "Pillar Supporting Heaven." As you explore deeper, you will encounter the "Birth Door" (Cua Sinh), a small passage rich with stalactites that legend says grants health and prosperity to those who pass through it.

The phenomenon of the "Stone Drum"

One of the unique acoustic features of Van Trinh Cave is its "stone drum." There are specific stalactites that, when tapped gently, resonate with a deep, echoing sound similar to a drumbeat. This natural music adds an interactive layer to the tour, allowing visitors to hear the "voice" of the mountain as they explore its depths.
