While Trang An and Tam Coc often steal the spotlight, Van Long Nature Reserve remains Ninh Binh’s serene, hidden treasure for true nature lovers. Known locally as the "Bay Without Waves," this submerged wetland offers a mirror-like surface that reflects dramatic limestone cliffs, creating a landscape that feels like a traditional ink painting brought to life. It is not just a scenic spot but the largest wetland nature reserve in the Red River Delta and the last stronghold of the critically endangered Delacour's langur.

About Van Long Nature Reserve

Located in Gia Vien District, about 17km from Ninh Binh City, Van Long was not originally a natural lake but formed after the construction of a massive dyke in 1960. This happy accident turned the area into a sprawling 3,500-hectare wetland ecosystem, rich in biodiversity and surrounded by a fortress of mountains. Today, it serves as a protected sanctuary where visitors can escape the tour bus crowds and experience the quiet, primal beauty of Northern Vietnam.

Best time to visit

The reserve is enchanting year-round, but May and June are particularly stunning when the lotus fields are in full bloom, turning the green waters into a sea of pink. For wildlife enthusiasts, the dry season from November to April is ideal; this is when massive flocks of migratory birds return to nest, and the cooler weather makes for a comfortable boat ride. To maximize your chances of seeing the rare langurs and birds, plan your boat trip for the late afternoon (around 3:30 PM - 5:00 PM), as animals are most active during sunset.

What makes Van Long Nature Reserve special?

The "Bay Without Waves"

The nickname is no exaggeration; the water here is exceptionally calm because the surrounding mountains block strong winds. This creates a flawless mirror effect where the karst peaks are perfectly duplicated on the water's surface, making it a dream destination for photographers. As your bamboo boat glides through the reeds, the only sound you hear is the gentle splash of the oar, offering a meditative stillness that is hard to find elsewhere.

Home of the Delacour's Langur

Van Long is the most important site in the world for the conservation of the Delacour's langur, a primate species with a distinctive "white shorts" marking on its black fur. It is estimated that a significant portion of the global population lives on the cliffs right here. While sightings are never guaranteed, eagle-eyed visitors often spot them leaping between rock crevices high above the water, a thrill that adds a safari-like element to the boat trip.

A Birdwatcher's Haven

Beyond the monkeys, Van Long is a thriving avian sanctuary. The reserve supports thousands of birds, including bonelli’s eagles, grey herons, and pheasants. At sunset, the sight of hundreds of white storks flying home to roost against the backdrop of limestone mountains creates a breathtaking natural spectacle.
