About Thien Ha Cave

Located in Son Ha Commune, Nho Quan District, Thien Ha Cave is part of the solid natural wall that once protected the ancient capital of Hoa Lu in the 10th century. Accessing the cave is an adventure in itself, requiring a short boat ride from the Muong Tho Ha wharf through a scenic canal, followed by a walk on a stone path shaded by ancient trees. The cave remained hidden for centuries until it was officially surveyed and opened to tourism, revealing a spectacular 700-meter-long system divided into dry and wet sections.

Best time to visit

Thien Ha Cave is accessible year-round, as the temperature inside remains a cool and constant 20-22°C, making it a perfect escape from the outside weather. However, the best time to visit is during the dry season from November to April, when the water in the underground river is calm and crystal clear. Visiting during the summer months (May to July) is also rewarding, as you can admire blooming lotuses on the canal ride leading to the cave entrance, adding a splash of color to your journey.

What makes Thien Ha Cave so special?

The majestic dry cave

The exploration begins with a 200-meter walk through the dry section of the cave, which feels like stepping into a grand, natural palace. This area is expansive and airy, featuring a magnificent "Sky Well" (a natural opening in the ceiling) that allows shafts of natural sunlight to pierce the darkness and illuminate the rock floor. The stalactites here have been sculpted over millions of years into fantastic shapes, with locals naming them after vivid images like a stone castle, an elephant, and a tiger, sparking the imagination of every visitor.

The "Galaxy" water cave

The highlight of the trip is boarding a small boat to navigate the 500-meter-long water cave, which is the true "Galaxy" of the complex. As you drift along the subterranean river, the flashlight beams reflect off the wet stalactites on the ceiling, creating a glittering effect that resembles stars in the night sky. The silence here is profound, broken only by the sound of the paddle, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the ethereal beauty of this underground world.

A site of ancient history

Beyond its geological beauty, Thien Ha Cave is a significant archaeological site that connects visitors to Vietnam's prehistoric past. Excavations have revealed traces of ancient Vietnamese people, including mollusk shells, charcoal, and crude stone tools, proving that this cave was a shelter for early humans. Walking through these chambers offers a humbling perspective, knowing that you are following in the footsteps of ancestors who lived here thousands of years ago.
