For travelers seeking the single most spectacular panoramic view in Northern Vietnam, the summit of Lying Dragon Mountain (Ngoa Long Mountain) is the definitive destination. Often referred to as the "Great Wall of Vietnam," this limestone peak challenges visitors with a steep, rewarding climb to a stone dragon that watches over the Tam Coc valley. While the journey up is physically demanding, the reward is an unforgettable, 360-degree vista of emerald rice paddies, winding rivers, and towering karsts that defines the magic of Ninh Binh.

Introduction to Lying Dragon Mountain

Lying Dragon Mountain is the crowning jewel of the Mua Cave (Hang Mua) tourist complex, located deep in the Trang An Landscape Complex. Unlike other attractions in Ninh Binh where you are a passive observer on a boat, this site demands active participation. Visitors must conquer nearly 500 stone steps that zigzag up the steep face of the mountain, mimicking the architecture of the Great Wall of China.

Best time to visit

The best time to climb is during the dry season from November to April, when the weather is cool and comfortable for hiking. For photographers, the absolute peak window is late May to early June, when the rice fields below turn a brilliant golden yellow for the harvest. To avoid the heat and the biggest crowds, plan your ascent for early morning (around 7:00 AM) or late afternoon (around 4:30 PM) to catch the sunset.

How to get there

The mountain is located in Khe Dau Ha village, just 5-6 km from Ninh Binh City and about 4 km from Tam Coc center. You can easily reach the base of the mountain by renting a bicycle or motorbike from your accommodation, or by taking a quick taxi ride. The entrance fee to the Mua Cave complex, which includes access to the mountain, is 100,000 VND per person.

What to experience on Ngoa Long Mountain (Lying Dragon Mountain)?

The experience of visiting Ngoa Long Mountain is more than just a hike; it is a multi-layered adventure that offers different perspectives at every elevation.

The Challenge of the 500 Steps

The ascent itself is the first major experience. The white stone staircase is steep and uneven, requiring a moderate level of fitness and determination. As you climb, you will pass intricate stone carvings of dragons and phoenixes, and halfway up, the path splits. The right fork leads to the Pagoda tower, a perfect warm-up, while the left fork takes you higher to the main Lying Dragon summit.

The summit and the Stone Dragon

At the very top, you are greeted by the magnificent stone dragon sculpture that stretches along the mountain's razor-sharp ridge. This dragon is not just a statue but a symbol of prosperity and rain, watching over the agricultural lands below. You can carefully walk along the rocky ridge (exercise extreme caution) to stand next to the dragon, offering one of the most iconic photo opportunities in all of Southeast Asia.

The 360-degree panoramic view

The true prize of the climb is the view. From one side, you look down directly onto the Ngo Dong River, where tiny sampan boats from the Tam Coc tour look like drifting leaves on a stream. From the other side, you see the endless patchwork of rice fields and the jagged limestone skyline of the Trang An complex. It is a place where the scale of nature makes you feel small, offering a moment of awe that makes every step of the climb worthwhile.

Extra tips for first-time travellers

To ensure your climb is safe and enjoyable, keep these practical tips in mind before you go.

  • Footwear Matters: Do not attempt this climb in flip-flops or slippery sandals. The stone steps can be jagged, uneven, and worn smooth by millions of feet. Wear sturdy sneakers or hiking shoes with good grip.

  • Bring Water and Go Slow: There are no vendors after you pass the ticket gate, and the climb gets hot very quickly. Bring a full bottle of water with you. Take your time, use the landings to catch your breath, and don't rush the ascent.

  • Respect the Site: The dragon sculpture is located on sharp, jagged rocks with steep drop-offs and no safety rails. While it is tempting to climb on the dragon for a photo, be extremely careful and prioritize your safety over a selfie.

  • Visit the Lotus Pond: After your descent, don't leave immediately. Wander through the beautiful wooden boardwalks over the lotus pond at the base of the mountain. If you are visiting in summer, the blooming lotus flowers provide a stunning, peaceful contrast to the rugged mountain you just conquered.
